The Lunar

The scale that changed how espresso gets dialed in.

Before the Lunar, most espresso scales were an afterthought. A plastic puck you stuck under the portafilter and hoped kept up. acaia built the Lunar to actually keep up. Fast stabilization, 0.1 g resolution, a display you can read under bar light, and a body carved from water-resistant anodized aluminum so it survives the spills and drips that come with real brewing.

This is the rebuilt version. acaia kept the silhouette that made the original a staple on World Barista Championship stages, then reworked the weighing technology underneath. The scale settles faster. The flow rate indicator reads in real time, a strip of LEDs that shows grams per second as the shot runs. You see the shot develop, not just the final weight.

The rest of the design is about staying out of the way. USB-C charging. 30 to 40 hours of continuous use per charge. Auto-start modes that begin the timer when coffee hits the cup. A Tare Save function that remembers the weight of your favorite dosing container so you stop taring manually every shot. Small things, but they compound over a busy morning.

Most espresso scales react. The Lunar keeps up.

The Lunar lives on espresso bars because espresso bars are the hardest environment a scale can work in. Steam, water, portafilters dropped from an inch too high. The anodized aluminum shell is water-resistant, and the warranty covers water damage, which tells you something about how acaia expects it to be used.

At home, that same build quality means the scale you buy today is the scale you'll still be using in five years.

Eight things to know

What's built into the Lunar.

01

Water-resistant anodized aluminum

The shell is machined aluminum with an anodized coating that resists water, stains, and scratches. The warranty explicitly covers water damage. Built for a working bar, not a protected countertop.

02

Real-time flow rate indicator

A row of LEDs lights up as coffee flows, showing grams per second from 0.1 on the left to 3.4 on the right. You read the shot as it develops and adjust grind, dose, or puck prep based on what you see.

03

0.1 g resolution, fast stabilization

The weighing technology is the same industrial sensor platform acaia builds for commercial use. Readings stabilize quickly so you can start timing the moment coffee hits the cup.

04

Auto-start brewing modes

Choose how the scale behaves when you pull a shot. Dual display, auto-start timer, espresso mode, flow rate mode. The scale adapts to how you brew rather than forcing a single workflow.

05

Tare Save

Save the weight of your preferred dosing cup or receiver. The scale recalls it and tares automatically, so you skip a step every time you brew.

06

USB-C charging

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 30 to 40 hours of continuous use per charge. USB-C cable included. No proprietary dock, no disposable batteries.

07

Bluetooth 5.0

Pairs with the acaia Coffee app for firmware updates, brew logging, and compatibility with third-party espresso software.

08

High-contrast 8-digit LED display

Bright enough to read under bar lighting or at a sunny kitchen counter. Shows weight, time, and flow rate together so you don't have to look away mid-shot.

How it works

How the Lunar fits into a shot.

Place the portafilter on the scale. The Lunar tares automatically if you've set Tare Save. Start the pull. The timer begins when coffee hits the cup, and the flow rate LEDs track grams per second as the shot develops.

The scale gives you three numbers at once: time, weight, flow rate. That's the full picture of a shot. When the target weight hits, you stop the pull. Over time, the flow rate curve becomes the most useful of the three, because it tells you whether the puck is resisting evenly or channeling.

Who it's for

Who the Lunar is for.

If you pull espresso at home and you're past the point of eyeballing yield, the Lunar is the scale to buy once. It costs more than the plastic alternatives because it's built to outlast them, and because the real-time flow rate data changes how you learn to dial in.

If you run a café bar, the Lunar is already the default. It's the scale you see on World Barista Championship stages because it keeps up with how fast the competition moves.

Works with

Part of a small system.

The Lunar pairs with the acaia Coffee app for brew logging and firmware updates, and talks to third-party espresso software over Bluetooth. Add a Lunar Carrying Case for travel, a Heat Resistant Pad for long extractions, or a Calibration Weight if you want to verify accuracy yourself.

Warranty

2-year warranty, water damage included.

acaia covers the Lunar for two years in the US and EU, one year in other regions. The warranty explicitly covers water damage, which is rare in this category and reflects how the scale is built. Clean the aluminum shell with a soft cloth and warm water. Skip detergents so the anodized coating stays intact.
