The Sette 30

A radically different grinder, priced accessibly.

The Sette line threw out the grinder playbook. Instead of a horizontal burr set with a long chute that trapped grounds, Baratza built the Sette vertically. The top burr rotates, the bottom burr is fixed, and the grounds fall straight through in a clean line into your portafilter or bin.

The result is close to zero retention. Baratza publishes a retention figure of roughly 0.5 grams between doses. That is a rounding error compared to most grinders in this category, which can hold 2 to 5 grams of yesterday's coffee in their chutes.

The Sette 30 is the simplest version of that architecture. 31 stepped macro adjustments, one programmable timer, 1/10th-second accuracy. S1 burrs manufactured in Liechtenstein, tuned for espresso and medium-fine brew methods.

The top burr rotates, the bottom stays still, and the grounds fall straight through.

Swap-in burrs change the character of the grinder. The S1 set ships for espresso and AeroPress. Drop in a BG brew burr set in about thirty seconds, and the Sette 30 opens into coarser filter territory.

A convertible device holder handles portafilters, drip cones, and AeroPress without accessories. A 19:1 planetary gearbox runs a high-torque DC motor, grinding at 3.5 to 5.5 grams per second, which is genuinely fast.

This is the Sette architecture without the scale or the micro-adjustment ring. If you want the geometry and the zero-retention behavior, without paying for features you will not use, the 30 is the entry point.

Eight things to know

What the Sette 30 does differently.

01

Vertical, straight-through burr design

The top burr rotates while the bottom stays fixed. Grounds fall straight down into the portafilter or bin, rather than traveling through a horizontal chute. Retention drops to roughly half a gram between doses.

02

40mm conical S1 burrs

Manufactured in Liechtenstein by Etzinger. S1 burr geometry is tuned for espresso and medium-fine filter brewing. Swap to BG burrs in about 30 seconds for coarser methods.

03

31 stepped macro adjustments

A single adjustment ring moves the burrs through the full espresso-to-filter range. Clicks are discrete and repeatable. No micro ring on this model.

04

High-torque DC motor with 19:1 planetary gearbox

Patented crown gear drive reduces the motor's RPM down to a slower burr speed with plenty of torque. Grinds at 3.5 to 5.5 grams per second, faster than most grinders in the category.

05

Programmable timer, 1/10th-second accuracy

One preset by time. Program your dose once, press once, walk away. Accurate and repeatable for morning workflow.

06

Convertible device holder

Adjustable arm holds portafilters, pour-over drippers, and AeroPress without extra accessories. Also accepts the included grounds container.

07

Thermal cutoff protection

Auto-resetting high-limit switch prevents motor damage if the grinder overheats under heavy use. Protects the motor for long-term operation.

08

LED display

Simple readout for timer and dose settings. Not a touchscreen, not a menu. Just what you need to see.

How it works

How the Sette 30 handles a dose.

You set your grind on the macro ring, 1 through 31. Finer toward 1, coarser toward 31. A click at each step keeps adjustments repeatable.

Set your dose time using the LED interface, down to 1/10th of a second. Swing the device holder under the spout. Portafilter, AeroPress, drip cone, or the included grounds container all work.

Press start. The motor spins the top burr, beans fall through, and grounds drop straight down into your device. No chute, no clumping, no static-heavy buildup in horizontal tubes. Sub-gram retention between uses.

Who it's for

Who the Sette 30 is for.

The espresso home user who cares about retention and does not need a built-in scale. The subscriber who grinds daily and wants speed without a commercial footprint. The single-dose enthusiast who wants the Sette geometry at the most accessible price point.

If you want stepless micro-adjustment for dialing espresso tightly, the Sette 270 adds it. If you want weight-based dosing with an integrated scale, the Sette 270Wi is the right stop.

Entry point to the Sette line.

The architecture that defines the line.

The Sette 30 shares its burrs, gearbox, and device holder with the 270 and 270Wi. The upgrade path within the Sette family is linear: add micro-adjustment, add an integrated scale, add Bluetooth and an app. The chassis and the zero-retention behavior travel with you.
