The Forté BG

The brew-focused Forté. Steel burrs, narrow particle distribution, high cup clarity.

BG stands for Brew Grinder. Where the AP is tuned for all-purpose work with a lean toward espresso body, the BG is tuned for the filter side. The burrs are 54mm flat steel instead of ceramic. The particle distribution is tighter. The cup clarity is where this grinder earns its place.

Baratza built the Forté line to be the home-accessible version of the grinders that live in specialty cafes. The metal chassis is shared with the AP. The touchscreen, presets, and integrated scale are identical. What changes is the burr geometry, the burr material, and the resulting flavor profile.

Steel burrs produce a narrower particle distribution than ceramic, with fewer fines. For pour-over, drip, Chemex, and Kalita, fewer fines means less bitterness and clearer top-notes. For espresso, steel burrs on this platform lean bright rather than syrupy.

Steel burrs, tighter particle distribution. The filter side of the Forté line.

The grind range is 230 to 1150 microns. Grind speed is 1.2 to 2.4 grams per second, tuned slower than the AP to protect particle uniformity at the higher motor RPM.

The integrated scale is accurate to plus-or-minus 0.2 grams. Three programmable presets save dose profiles by weight or by time. The touchscreen interface is the same clean menu system as the AP.

If you have narrowed your brewing to filter and cold brew and want the commercial build quality, the BG is the right Forté variant. If you pull espresso daily, the AP's ceramic burrs give the shot its traditional body.

Ten things to know

What the BG does differently from the AP.

01

54mm flat steel burrs

Steel instead of ceramic. Narrower particle distribution, fewer fines, brighter cup clarity. Tuned specifically for filter brewing. Swappable if you want to change character later.

02

Touchscreen interface

Same LCD touchscreen as the Forté AP. Clean menus for grind settings, timer, weight targets, and the three programmable presets. Legible in any kitchen lighting.

03

Integrated scale, 0.2-gram accuracy

Built into the base. Measures grounds in real time and stops the motor within 0.2 grams of your target weight. Three presets hold weight-based dose profiles.

04

260 grind settings

Ten macro steps (1 to 10) with twenty-six micro steps each (A to Z). More adjustment than filter brewing strictly needs, which leaves room to explore and dial in specific coffees.

05

1950 RPM motor, 240W

The Forté platform motor. Seventy percent more power than the Vario class. Grinds at 1.2 to 2.4 grams per second. Tuned for steel burr performance.

06

Expandable bean hopper

Standard 10-ounce (roughly 300g) hopper seats on the top. Optional extension raises capacity to 19 ounces. For subscribers who brew through whole bags, the expansion cuts refill frequency.

07

Metal chassis and grinding chamber

Thirteen pounds of metal. Vibration-damped, counter-planted, commercial-build philosophy. This is a grinder that lives in one place and grinds for years.

08

58mm portafilter holder

Shared with the AP. Commercial-standard 58mm portafilter fits directly. Pour-over cones and other brewing devices accept via the same arm.

09

Calibration tool included

Factory calibration is preserved by the included tool. If the burrs shift over time, recalibration is a user task, not a service visit.

10

50-hour motor warranty

Commercial-grade coverage. One year or fifty cumulative motor hours, whichever comes first. For a home user at a few minutes of grinding per day, fifty hours is years.

How it works

How the BG works.

Pick a profile on the touchscreen. The BG is tuned for filter brewing, so your common profiles might be V60, Chemex, drip, French press. Each profile stores a grind setting and a target weight or time.

Place your brewer, server, or grounds bin on the scale platform under the spout. The scale tares automatically.

Press the profile. The 1950 RPM motor spins the steel burrs, grounds fall into your vessel, and the scale reads them in real time. The grinder cuts off within 0.2 grams of your target. For a 22-gram Chemex dose, you land between 21.8 and 22.2 every time.

Who it's for

Who the BG is for.

The dedicated filter brewer who wants commercial-grade build and steel burr clarity. The pour-over devotee who wants the same grinder a specialty cafe uses for their drip bar. The subscriber who has shifted away from espresso and wants the best possible filter grinder under the Mahlkönig tier.

If espresso is part of your daily ritual, the Forté AP with ceramic burrs gives you richer body on the shot. If cost is a bigger concern than the specific burr material, the Vario W+ with steel burrs delivers similar character at a lower price, with less commercial-grade build.

The brew side of the Forté family.

Shop-grade tools for the home drip bar.

The Forté BG shares its chassis, motor platform, integrated scale, and touchscreen with the Forté AP. What differentiates is the burr set. The BG is the filter-tuned variant, engineered for the same longevity and repeatability as the AP, with a character tuned for the cup clarity that filter brewers care about.

Warranty

Commercial-grade coverage.

Baratza covers the Forté BG for 1 year or 50 hours of cumulative motor runtime, whichever comes first. The 50-hour rating reflects the platform's commercial duty cycle, which at home translates to years of daily grinding.

Support

Built for the long run.

Every internal component is serviceable. Baratza's parts catalog covers the Forté platform extensively. For a grinder at this price, the support ecosystem is as much a part of the value as the hardware.
